VoiceXML (Voice Extensible Markup Language) is an open standard markup language for voice applications. It is fully analogous to HMTL and takes advantage of the existing HTML web infrastructure to easily develop and deploy voice applications. First published by the VoiceXML Forum in March 2000, VoiceXML technology is now managed under the auspices of the W3C, World Wide Web Consortium. VoiceXML offers the same advantages to voice applications that HTML brings to visual applications. HTML documents are interpreted by a visual web browser, whereas VoiceXML is interpreted by a voice browser. HTML utilizes a graphical web browser along with a display, keyboard, and mouse. VoiceXML uses a voice browser with audio output, audio input, and touchtone keypad input. A speech recognizer is responsible for handling the voice input. And the audio output could take the form of either voice recordings or synthesized speech using the voice browser's text to speech technology. There are thousands of commercial voice XML applications deployed today in a wide range of industries. These applications are responsible for providing driving directions, tracking orders or packages, supporting voice access to email, refilling prescriptions, flight tracking, wake up calls, and much more.
