Telecom management software

Telecom management software is just as critical to the telecom operator as the switches, routers, circuits, and phone lines that carry the calls. Telecommunications management falls under the umbrella of OSS (Operations Support System) solutions. These software applications enable service providers to manage all aspects of their network, from launching new subscriber services to maintaining customers, minimizing operating costs, improving network performance, and capturing more revenue from existing business.

Telcom management software solutions fall into several categories:

  • billing
  • customer care
  • service activation and provisioning
  • resource management
  • vendor management
  • workforce management.

For example, billing solutions will include real-time charging, rate management, collections services, electronic bill presentation for subscriber self-service.

In 1988, the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) developed a set of TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) standards that would allow the network to be operated consistently across all network element suppliers. By adhering to these standards, OSS vendors and integrators are supposed to provide flexible, plug-and-play systems that are interoperable. In reality, this has had varying levels of success; unfortunately, it can by no means be assumed that TMN applications will be interoperable.
