Although blamed for skewing the results in American Idol voting, power dialers are used by telemarketing organizations to maximize the efficiency of their outbound call campaigns. In short, power dialing (also known as progressive dialing) is an automated dialing system that enables more calls to be made in less time. It automates the mundane processes of dialing, waiting for an answer, and reaching a busy signal or unanswered number. Power dialing systems consist of hardware for the dialing and list management software, which can be as simple as a basic database. Configuration varies; one system dials three numbers simultaneously and waits for a call to be answered. Others allow an administrator to specify a fixed number of lines to dial per agent. And, low-cost single line systems are available. A power dialer can effectively screen out unanswered, busy signals, and answering machines, but it does not offer a sophisticated predictive algorithm to calculate when the next agent will be available. For this reason, it is not as efficient as a predictive dialer, but will still result in increased productivity (34% in one study). Power dialing is also available at a fraction of the cost, making it an ideal solution for small call centers, business-to-business inside sales, and sales representatives.
