At its best, phone dialer software optimizes dialing efficiency - automating outbound calls for telemarketers, inside sales, and busy executives alike. Dialer software can be as simple of a program as the dialer.exe application bundled with Windows. But at their worst, phone dialers can cause hundreds of dollars in fraudulent phone expenses. That's right. More and more unsuspecting individuals are shocked by their phone bills. And the culprit is a simple phone dialing program that had been unknowingly installed onto a PC in numerous ways. When activated, they use the PC's modem to make telephone calls to very expensive services, typically adult sites. The site bills the phone company, who in turn bills the customer. Users with broadband DSL or cable typically will not be affected by these malicious dialers. The dialer can still be downloaded and installed, but will not be able to place an outgoing phone call since the dial-up modem will not be connected to a phone line (unless an ISDN adapter or additional analog modem is also installed).
