An automated attendant is a front-end for your phone system. Consider it a "virtual employee" that routes your callers to the person, department, or information they need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The phone auto attendant plays a customized greeting message and then prompts the caller for information. Some systems gather information from the caller (like account information) before sending them to a live agent. Others can ask callers about their reason for calling and route them to the appropriate department. Phone auto attendants have become increasingly prevalent among businesses of all sizes, as a backup system for a live operator, as an after-hours answering system, and as the primary interface for callers. Initial automated attendant systems relied on touchtone technology, i.e. "If you are calling about a billing question, press 1 now." However, great advancements in voice recognition over recent years have greatly enhanced the attendant's functionality in serving callers.
