IP phone software

With IP phone software, you can turn any laptop or computer into an IP phone. Soft phones, as they're called, typically offer a graphical user interface that works like your telephone keypad. You can place calls, receive calls, pick up voicemail, as well as enjoy advanced features like call transfer, caller ID with Name, etc. Software-based phones are usually run with a headset connected to the computer's sound card or with a USB phone. These applications are part of VoIP (Voice over IP) technology and are based on standard protocols SIP or H.323 (although a few still use proprietary protocols).

Soft phones are generally inferior to hard phones in voice quality, but are cheaper and more flexible. VoIP providers, like Vonage and Skype, offer softphone applications with their service. Other widely available versions are Microsoft Windows Messenger and NetMeeting.
