Available 800 numbers

Toll free numbers are assigned using a first-come, first-served basis. Toll-free service providers can inform you about available 800 numbers, as well as alternate toll-free 866, 877, and 888 numbers.

The 800 Service Management System, known as SMS/800, is an administrative support system that is responsible for maintaining all toll-free number and call processing records. The SMS/800 hosts the toll free number database; this is the official record for available and reserved 800, 866, 877, and 888 numbers. It keeps track of which numbers are available and which are already in use.

Responsible Organizations (Resp Orgs) are given access to the SMS/800 database. Traditionally, Resp Orgs are telecommunications companies, but non-telecommunications companies can also be authorized as toll free number providers. These Resp Orgs can determine 800 number availability, reserve toll free numbers for their customers, and set up routing information for these numbers. Toll free providers do vary in their price offerings, so be sure to check with your long distance carrier, as well as some alternate listings.
