800 numbers

800 numbers are some of the most widely used business telephony applications. Advances in technology and competition have dramatically driven down prices since the first 800 number appeared in 1967. Today, it's quite feasible for businesses of all sizes - even sole proprietors and one-man shops - to have a toll free number. In fact, 800 service is used by families as a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to long distance calling.

There have been several advancements in toll free applications. Companies can design their own phone number. Similar in concept to vanity license plates, a vanity number spells out a phrase or name with the alphanumeric telephone keypad. This enables companies to have mnemonic, easy-to-recall numbers like 1-800-FLOWERS or 1-800-DENTIST.

Toll free numbers are now portable. This ruling by the FCC in 1993 has increased competition as subscribers are now able to take their existing number to another carrier. Without number portability, customers would be more reluctant to switch their service, since they could not afford to get rid of a widely-known number.
